His Firthness

I watched "The King's Speech" recently, and just had to make a congratulatory post in honor of Colin Firth and his fantastic abilities as a top British actor.

My favorites of his roles:
As Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
THE Mr. Darcy. The Mr.  Darcy which all Mr. Darcy's after him
will have to equal or top (not likely!).
He was SO good at being Mr. Darcy, that he played another one.
As Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary

As His Majesty King George VI, in The King's Speech

My 2 favorite quotes of his:

(On Acting) "Actors are just basically drag queens.  People will tell you they act because they want to heal mankind or, you know, explore the nature of the human psyche.  Yes, maybe.  But basically we just want to put on a frock and dance."
(On "The Pond Scene" in Pride and Prejudice) "It's a testament to the contortions of a viewer's imagination, that that scene is remembered the way it is.  Because, I read stuff about this 'transparent wet shirt clinging to these chiseled contours' and... I didn't have 'chiseled contours' and as you can see, that shirt isn't really that transparent."

Here is his interview on "Inside The Actor's Studio", filmed just 3 hours after he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!  Enjoy! :)

  1. He was wonderful in Bridget Jone's Diary - the sweater he wore while keeping a straight face was priceless.

  2. My man! Thank you, so much, for making my Fourth extra dreamy. I was at Jane Austen's house several years ago and there was a door-sized poster of Mr.Darcy just like this and only 2.5pounds! I must have it. So, I asked the clerk for a poster and he said they sold out in the first week and never ordered any more because Ms. Austen was known for more than just her Mr. Darcy character. I said I'd buy the one on the door and, of course, he said it wasn't for sale. Obviously, the man wasn't a store owner and didn't understand the concept of selling product to willing buyers. I was not a happy camper. 8-(

  3. LOL!
    Marcy- I know, right!
Sharlene- I've seen photos of it and I want one too!!! Have you tried Ebay?? :) What money they could have made off those posters to go to the upkeep of the museum! :) Jane's house is on my 'must do' list for June 2013!

  4. Sigh... I do love me some Colin Firth! I was quite the Hugh Grant addict in my early 20s, and one day my best friend (who is Scottish) phoned me up just to say, "Forget Hugh Grant! You must go see (I forget what movie it was) and drool over Colin Firth! He's gorgeous! And oh, how right she was. :)
